RIFLE SHOOTING AT STEYNING.

HURSTPEIRPOINT DEFEATED BY EX-SERVICE MEN.

The Hurstpierpoint and District Rifle Club took a team of ten men to Steyning on July 24 for the fourth annual competition with the local ex-Service men. The contest was a keen one, and the Hurst team were defeated (for the first time in four years) by 24 points. It is only fair to state that the visitors were without four of their best shots, their places being taken by men with less experience, particularly at 500 yards. A tricky, cross wind, with intermittent rain, made the shooting difficult at 500 yards, and in the words of a competitor, I “got the younger people guessing”. The friendly rivalry and good sportsmanship of the competitors on both sides made the shoot a most enjoyable one. The conditions were: Bisley targets, open sights and no slings; seven shots at 200 and 500 yards; ten men to shoot, best eight to count. The results were as follows;

MARKSMEN AT STEYNING

NARROW LEAD FOR HORSHAM VISITORS.

A team of eight Old Boys of the 4th Bn. Of the Royal Sussex Regiment, from Horsham, visited Steyning on Sunday to meet a similar team selected from the local Old Boys of the same Battalion, in a shooting competition on the open range. The rain made conditions more like active service and naturally hampered the chances of the contestants. A glance at the scores, however, shows that the shooting was, with only one exception, of a high standard.

G. Coleman, of Steyning, was the most successful long range shot, scoring 23 out of a possible 28 at 500 yards. Despite the fact that Adcock only scored 5 at this range, the local team was only one point below the visitors, but the Horsham men were 11 points to the good at the 200 yards range, and won the match by 302 points to 290. SHOOTING MATCH AT HURSPIERPOINT.

EX SERVICE MEN IN COMPETITION.

The annual return shooting match between teams representing Hurstpierpoint British Legion Rifle Club and Steyning ex-Service men weas fired at Steyning Rifle Range on Sunday. The conditions were seven shots at 200 and 500 yards, with Bisley targets, open sights and slings optional. All competitors were troubled by a very strong cross wind, and at 500 yards a heavy downpour of rain made the shooting even more difficult. The fact that the targets were at times almost invisible accounted for the low scores at this distance. The even shooting of both teams at 200 yards gave promise of a close finish to the match, but the Hurst men, who had better overcome the wretched conditions at 500 yards, secured a confutable victory by 24 points. Appended are the scores;
