VOLUNTEER TRTAINING CORPS.

TO THE EDITOR WEST SUSSEX COUNTY TIMES.

Dear Sir, As an ordinary private on the Horsham Company Sussex Volunteer Training Corps, may I ask whether the local residents appreciate what the men are doing. We get a good deal of “chipping”, some good-humoured, some sarcastic, some ignorant, from people who think we are playing at soldiers for the sake of something to do, or to “swank” in our uniform. As a matter of fact, the attendance at drill twice or thrice a week means, in most cases, a very real sacrifice of time, leisure, and even business hours. Apart from the cause for which our Country is fighting, and for which we are preparing ourselves to take part when the call comes, the sacrifice is worthwhile for the benefit physically which accrues as a result of drills and marches.

Then we are learning to shoot, first on the Local Miniature Rifle Range and afterwards at Steyning on the full range with service rifles. Many of our men are quite good shots, and a large number of efficiency badges have already been awarded. Our officers are keen, sympathetic, capable men of whom we are proud. Now for an unofficial appeal – we want recruits – about a hundred of them, and may I urge the men of Horsham over 40  years of age to join at once and take their place alongside their fellows in preparing themselves to defend their Country and their homes. Don’t wait until it is too late! Yours faithfully, PRIVATE BRITON.
