2nd SUSSEX (STEYNING AND HENFIELD) RIFLES.

A competition of the ‘L’ Company of the above corps was held at the Steyning range on Saturday, when nine members competed in order to decide who should represent the company at Littlehampton on Whit-Monday and Tuesday. The five highest scores will represent the company. The conditions were 15 shots at each range;-

STEYNING AND HENFIELD RIFLES.

A competition was held on Saturday to represent the corps  at Littlehampton to shoot for the battalion cup, when the following were the five successful, the conditions being ten shots at 200 and 500 yards:- Sergeant G. Roberts, 59: Corporal J. Woolgar, 56: Private G. Kempshall, 53: Corporal F. Chalcraft, 49: and Private Dewdney, 49.

ANNUAL PRIZE MEETING OF THE RIFLE VOLUNTEERS.- The annual prize meeting of the Henfield and Steyning Rifle Volunteers took place on Friday. Corporal Chalcraft won both the ladies and tradesmen’s cups, as well as two other first prizes.

THE VOLUNTEERS.

The sixth and last monthly competition of the L Company (Henfield) of the 2nd Sussex Rifle Volunteers, took place on Saturday afternoon week, when Corporal F. Chalcraft was top scorer, with 57 points. The prize of £1 which is given for the highest aggregate score in any three competitions out of the six was won by Corporal F. Chalcraft with a score of 167 points.

Mid Sussex Times Tuesday, 6th September 1887.

HENFIELD.

The annual prize shooting meeting of the L (Henfield and Steyning) Company of the 2nd Volunteer Battalion of the Royal Sussex Regiment took place at Steyning on Saturday, when about 40 competed in the eight competitions. The officers present were: Captain H. T. West, Lieut. C .M. Lewis, and Lieut. W. H. Gorringe. The weather was unfavourable for good shooting but excellent scores were made by Private Tweed (a recruit), Sergeant Penfold, Private Kempshall, Corporal Chalcraft, and Corporal Woolgar at the 500 and 600 yards range. The volley firing by squads of six for a half-dozen of sherry presented by C. H. Smith, of Henfield, was won by No. 3 squad (Lance Corporal Samuel Reeves’) scoring 11 points.

THE VOLUNTEERS.

Major West, Commanding the L Company 2nd Volunteer Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment, has issued the following orders for July;- July 25th at Steyning, company drill at 7pm 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th and 31st at Henfield , squad at 7pm. 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th at Steyning, class firing at 2.30 pm. 7th at Steyning, a shooting match with B Company 1st Sussex at 2.30pm. July 28th at Steyning, monthly competition at 4.30pm. On Saturday week the third monthly competition of the Company took place at the Steyning range, when good scores were made by Privates C. and E. Kempshall, Sergeant G. Roberts and Lance-Corpl. S. Reeves. The conditions were seven shots at 200, 500 and 600 yards. The following are the scores;-

On Saturday 12 of the Steyning Corps had a friendly competition at the Steyning Range with 12 members of the B Company 1st Volunteer Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment, and secured a victory by 87 points. Score: Steyning, 610, Corporal Chalcraft being top scorer wit 66 out of a possible 75; B Company, 523.

THE VOLUNTEERS.-

On Saturday afternoon a friendly shooting match between 10 members of the L Company of Volunteers of the 2nd Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment an 10 members of the Shoreham Battery of Artillery Volunteers took place at the Steyning range, and resulted in a victory for the L Company of Volunteers by 76 points. The conditions were – ten shots at each range – five shots with the Martini rifle and five with the carbine. Score: L Company, 625; Shoreham Battery, 550.

RIFLE VOLUNTEERS’ MONTLY COMPETITION.-

The fifth competition was won on Saturday by Pvt. C. Kempshall, with 53 points (seven shots each at 200, 500 and 600 yards), Lance-Corporal S. Reeves being second, with 82. The third man was 16 points below this.

VOLUNTEER PRZE SHOOTING MEETING.

On Saturday the annual prize shooting meeting of the L (Henfield) Company of the 2nd Volunteer Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment took place at the Steyning Rifle Range. The weather was beautifully fine, and a large company witnessed the competitions, including Colonel and Mrs Ingram, Mrs H. Gorringe and party (Kingston-by-Sea), Mrs H.T. West, the Misses Lewis, and others. Major H.T. West was in command, and surgeon-Major Lewis, Lieut. C.M. Lewis, and Lieut. W.H. Gorringe wee also present. There were six competitions, for each of which money prizes were offered. Lieut. Lewis’s cup was won by Lance-Corporal S. Reeves with 52 points, and Corporal F. Chalcraft was the winner of the ladies’ prize for Miss Woodward, with 73 points. The sum of £19 was awarded in prizes. Private Stanford was first in the first competition, Corporal F. Chalcraft first in the second, Lance-Corpl. S. Reeves first (15s.) in the third and first (£2) in the fifth. Private C. Kempshall first in the fourth, and Private A. Witten first in the sixth (consolation). The most successful competitor of the day was Lance-Corporal Reeves.

THE VOLUNTEERS.

On Saturday the first monthly competition of the season of the L Company Second Volunteer Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment took place at the Steyning Range, when fair shooting was done by the competitors with seven shots at 200, 500 and 600 yards, at Wimbledon targets, the total scores at the three distances of the seven competitors being 82 (Corporal F. Chalcraft), 77, 72, 60, 57, 57. And 56.

THE VOLUNTEERS.

On Saturday the third monthly competition of the L Company 2nd Volunteer Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment was held at the Steyning Range, when the haze and heavy atmosphere prevented large scores being made. With seven shots at the three distances (200, 500 and 600 yards) the ten competitors scored as follows: – 71 (Sergt. G. Roberts), 71 (Corpl. Chalcraft), 68, 68, 68, 68, 65, 58, 56 and 40.

STEYNING.

VOLUNTEER PRIZE SHOOTING.

The L Company of 2nd Volunteer Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment have just held their annual prize meeting. Mr Woodward’s prizes at 200 and 400 yards for recruits were won by Privates H. English, A. English e. W. Beer, and J. Musson. The winners of the ladies’ prizes were Privates E. Kempshall, C. Kempshall, and J. Gordon and Corporal J. Foster. The challenge cup, presented by Lieut. Lewis, was won by Corporal F. Chalcraft, who also took the first money prizes in the series. Prizes in this competition were also taken by Corporal S. Reeves, Colour Sergeant Penfold and Sergeant G. Roberts. The prizes subscribed by inhabitants fell to Private E. Kempshall, Sergeant Instructor A. Page, Corporal F. Chalcraft, Corporal S, Reeves, Corporal J. Foster, Private F. Gordon and Colour Sergeant L. Penfold. Major West’s series, for those who attended camp three consecutive days were won by Privates F. Gordon, W. Sayers, A. English, H. Hills, J. Musson, H. English and A. Stringer. The consolation prizes fell to G. Humphrey, Lance Corporal Moody, and Private W. Chalcraft.
