10th (sic) SUSSEX (HENFIELD AND STEYNING) RIFLE VOLUNTEERS

The annual accounts of this corps for the year ending 31st October, 1873, have just been published. The receipts for the year amount to £258 12s. 9 1/2 d., of which £133 18s. 4d. was the balance on taking over the corps. The capitation grant was £53. The subscriptions amount to £55 13s., and the amount realised by the sale of ammunition and sundries, £16 1s. 5 1/2 d. The expenditure amounted to £271 19s. 11 1/2 d., which is made up of the following items: Uniforms, £62 19s. 1d.; targets, £12 19s.; three years rent of armoury, £42; and working expenses £99 1s. 10 1/2 d., leaving a balance in hand of £40 12s. 10d. The balance sheet also gives the company prize meeting account, which shows a deficiency of £2 4s. 5d., the receipts amounting to £27 3s. 6d., of which £16 18s. was subscribed, and £10 5s. 6d. obtained from the corps fund. The payments were as follows: Prizes in cash, £4 12s. 5d! making a total of £29 7s. 11d. The corps musters between 60 and 70 men, the only drawback at present being the want of a band.

18th SUSSEX RIFLES

A rifle competition took place on Monday at the Steyning range. About 15 men shot, and the scores, taking into consideration the wind, were good. The firing was at 200, 500, and 600 yards. Previous winners of over £3 were handicapped four points, and, strange to say, the only three men handicapped came in 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Private West won the first prize (a teapot, given by Captain G. Woodward) with a score of 41, Private Holloway the second (10s., given by Dr. Lewis) with 36 points, and Private Woolgar the third (7s. 6d.) with 33 points.

THE RIFLE CORPS.

The first monthly competition of the 18th Sussex Rifle Volunteers took place at the Steyning range on April 29th. There were ten competitors, the conditions being five shots at 200, 500 and 600 yards. The winners were Corporal J. Woolgar (34) 1st; Private James Holloway (34) 2nd; and Sergeant Penfold (32) 3rd.

The third monthly competition of the 18th (Henfield) Rifle Volunteers took place on the Steyning range on Saturday. The highest scores were made by Corporal G. Roberts, 43. Corporal J. Woolgar, 42; and Corporal J. Holloway, 37.

The fourth monthly competition of the 18th Sussex (Henfield) Rifles took place at the Steyning range on Saturday. The conditions were five shots at 200, 500 and 600 yards. Sergeant L. Penfold first, Corporal E. Roberts second, and Private Chelcraft (sic) third, each with the score of 37.


The Brighton Guardian 11th October 1876

The annual prize competition of the 18th Sussex (Henfield) Rifles took place at the range, Steyning, on Wednesday, and was a great success. The weather was fine. In the contest for Sir Walter Burrell, M.PS.,’s prizes (seven shots at 500 yards in any position), the principal winners were; – Corpl. Woolgar, 43; Corpl. Holloway, 31; Corpl. Roberts, 29. Capt. Woodard’s silver challenge cup was carried off by Private Chalcraft, with 36 points; and the Tradesmen’s Cup by Corpl. Woolgar.

HENFIELD

18TH SUSSEX RIFLE. – The first monthly competition of the season, by the members of this corps, took place on Saturday at the Steyning range. The following were the results; – Corporal Woolgar, 37 points, 1st prize; Corporal Foster, 36 points, 2nd prize; Sergeant Penfold, 35 points, 3rd prize.

A teapot, for the highest score made in three minutes. Competitors to run round a post 20 yards distant from the firing point after each shot. Range, 400 yards. Open to all comers. Corporal Chalcraft made seven shots, scoring 20 points, beating sergeant Roberts by one point only. This competition was very exciting, and caused great amusement to the numerous spectators present.

18th SUSSEX (STEUNING AND HENFIELD) RIFLES

A competition took place at the Steyning Range on Tuesday to determine the candidates who should represent the Corps at the forthcoming competitions at Brighton and Littlehampton. The following were selected at 120 shots each, qat 200, 500 and 600 yard; – For Brighton, Corporal Woolgar, Sergeant Penfold, Private Woolgar and Corporal Chalcraft. For Littlehampton, Corporal Woolgar, Sergeant Penfold, Private Woolgar, Corporal Chalcraft and Private Chowne.
